Tuya 32-Step LED Stairwell Controller: Light Follows Your Steps
The Tuya LED stairwell control unit turns the steps on one after the other when you step on them and turns them off when you pass. It has 32 independent channels , one per step, and you can set the number of channels for your staircase in the app. It controls digital SPI strips with color effects or single-color PWM strips, with voltages ranging from 5 to 24 V. The two PIR sensors included in the package are for the bottom and the top: they detect passage at a distance of three meters and connect to the control unit with the five-meter cables included. From the Tuya Smart app, you can choose the effect, speed, brightness, and switch-off delay; with Alexa and Google Assistant, you can do it by voice. It is available in the MS032W Wi-Fi version, which connects to the router, and the MS032Z Zigbee version, which requires a Tuya gateway. Strips , power supply , and gateway are purchased separately.
Tuya Smart App: Strip type, number of steps and effects
The setup is done only once from the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app. On the settings page, choose the strip's chip from the six supported ones and the color order. Then, specify the number of steps, from one to thirty-two, and the LEDs for each step. On the modes page, choose the effect , color, speed, and brightness. Using the up and down test, you can decide whether the stairs start from the bottom or the top. The same app manages scenes and automations with other Tuya devices in your home.
Voice commands with Alexa and Google: the staircase turns on with your voice
The control unit appears on Amazon Alexa and Google Home like a regular Tuya device. Simply connect your Tuya account to the assistant: from that moment on, you can turn the stairs on and off with a phrase, change the color, or activate a scene without having to pick up your phone. This is convenient in the evening, when your hands are full, or for those at home who don't use the app. The PIR sensors continue to work autonomously: the voice command is used to force the stairs on, for example during a party, or to turn them off completely. Everything works with both the Wi-Fi and Zigbee versions, as long as the gateway is connected to the same account.
Two PIR sensors included: turns on when you climb, turns off by itself
The package includes two passive infrared PIR sensors with a built-in or wall-mounted base. One goes at the bottom and one at the top: when you go up, the steps light up starting from the first; when you go down, they start from the last. The sensor detects motion up to three meters away at a 180° angle, thus covering the entire width of a domestic staircase. After the set delay time, the staircase turns off automatically. The two sensors connect to the control unit's sensor port with the included five-meter cables , one at each end of the staircase. If you need an additional sensor, for example on a landing, add the MR501 radio sensor from the same series, sold separately.
Connection diagram: one channel per step, up to 32 outputs
The layout is the same for both versions. The power supply plugs into the input screw terminals, with the same voltage as the strips. Each step strip goes on its own numbered pressure terminal , from one to thirty-two; if the staircase has fewer steps, leave the last channels free. Sensor A is at the bottom of the staircase and sensor B at the top. The MS032W connects to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi router and requires no additional hardware. The MS032Z speaks Zigbee and requires a Tuya Zigbee gateway , sold separately. The gateway integrates it into the app along with the other Zigbee devices in your home.
Switch on when passing with a light trail along the handrail
With digital strips, each step lights up in the color you choose, and the sequence follows the direction you walk. You can also run a strip along the handrail or side skirting, as pictured: the control unit drives it with the same SPI signal, and the light accompanies the steps. Six effects are available: scrolling, alternating, full on, chasing, rainbow, and trail. With single-color strips, you get the same progressive lighting in warm or cool white, without any colors. In both cases, you can adjust the brightness from 1 to 100%, so at night the stairs remain dim and glare-free.
In the package: control unit, two PIR sensors and 5-meter extension cables
Open the box and you'll find the control unit , the two PIR sensors with mounting bases, and two five-meter extension cables. There are also screws, a cable sticker, and the manual. The included sensors connect with the cable. The R and L buttons are used to pair the series' wireless accessories by holding them down for three seconds: R turns the light on from above, L from below. The same buttons are used for Wi-Fi configuration and reset. The outputs have push-on terminals : insert the strip's wire and tighten, without soldering. The wireless accessories are the MR501 sensor and the MR021 wall switch , sold separately, for manually turning on the staircase. All that's missing is the power supply, which must be chosen based on the strips.
Strips, power supply and gateway: what to pair with the control unit
The control unit works with digital LED strips with the chips listed above and with single-color strips , from 5 to 24 V. Choose a single voltage for the entire staircase and a power supply of the same voltage, with enough current for all the strips: the control unit supports up to 6 A per channel and 30 A in total. The Zigbee version also requires a gateway. Below you will find the strips, power supplies, and gateway we typically pair. It is suitable for straight, spiral, or ramped interior staircases, in homes, shops, or hotels.

Dynamic modes: one step at a time or multiple steps together
In step-by-step mode, the steps light up one at a time, following the person ascending. In group mode, multiple steps light up at once, quickly illuminating the entire staircase. In both modes, you can adjust the speed from 1 to 100 % e the time it takes for each step to light up, from one to thirty-two seconds. With the digital strips, you can add color effects: scrolling, rainbow, and trail. You can test everything from the app with the up and down test buttons: you can immediately see the result and correct the direction if the sensors are reversed.
