A WiFi thermostat (or smart thermostat) lets you manage your heating from your phone: switch it on and off, change the temperature and set schedules in the app, even when you're away, and by voice through Alexa and Google Home. Which WiFi thermostat for your heating system

Start with the wall box. For square 86x86 or round boxes, the usual formats in the UK and the rest of Europe, Beca's 002 series is among our best sellers, so it comes first in each recommendation below (all thermostats for 86x86 or round boxes). For the Italian 503 box there are the 9000 Expert4house Edition, 8000 and 005 series (all thermostats for 503 boxes). If only the 2 boiler wires reach the wall, with no power, choose a battery model.

Boiler with radiators
Recommended: Beca BHT-002GCLW for 86x86 or round boxes; Beca BHT-9000GCLW Expert4house Edition, Beca BHT-8000GCLW or Beca BHT-005GCW for the Italian 503 box
Why: They control the boiler through a 5 A voltage-free contact, just like your old room thermostat: they close the contact when heat is needed. The 9000 also has 5+1+1 weekly programming with 6 time slots a day and detects an open window. All models in boiler thermostats

No power at the wall: battery thermostats
Recommended: Tuya battery WiFi thermostat for boilers or the Beca BHT-8000RF battery thermostat
Why: For when only the 2 boiler wires reach the old thermostat. The Tuya runs on AAA batteries or USB power, has a 3 A NO/NC/COM relay and frost protection. The Beca has a thermostat on AA batteries and a receiver mounted near the boiler, powered at 230 V, which takes its commands by radio. More models in battery thermostats

Wet underfloor heating
Recommended: Beca BHT-002GALW for 86x86 or round boxes; Beca BHT-9000GALW Expert4house Edition, Beca BHT-8000GALW or Beca BHT-005GAW for the Italian 503 box; for several zones the Beca DV8000 control centre and the NC thermal actuator
Why: They control the manifold valves or thermal actuators, one per room. With the DV8000 you can connect up to 8 zones and the pump. All models in water heating thermostats

Electric heating
Recommended: Beca BHT-002GBLW for 86x86 or round boxes; Beca BHT-9000GBLW Expert4house Edition, Beca BHT-8000GBLW or Beca BHT-005GBW for the Italian 503 box; for plug-in heaters the Beca 16 A plug-in thermoregulator with probe
Why: They handle 16 A, so they power electric underfloor heating or panels directly. For an appliance with a plug, the plug-in thermoregulator is all you need. All models in electric heating thermostats

Fan coils
Recommended: for 86x86 or round boxes Beca BAC-002ALW for 2-pipe or Beca BAC-002ELW for 4-pipe; for the Italian 503 box Beca BAC-9000ALW Expert4house Edition, Beca BAC-8000ALW or Beca BAC-005ALW for 2-pipe, Beca BAC-9000ELW Expert4house Edition, Beca BAC-8000ELW or Beca BAC-005ELW for 4-pipe

24 V heat pump
Recommended: Beca BHP-8000
Why: It is powered at 24 V and designed for heat pumps with a 24 V thermostat input. Check your unit's wiring diagram before ordering, or send us a photo

eWeLink app (Sonoff)
Recommended: eWeLink boiler thermostat, for water heating or for electric heating
Why: If you already use the eWeLink app with Sonoff devices, you manage the thermostat in the same app, with weekly programming of up to 6 time slots a day. They come in the same three versions (boiler, water, electric) and need live and neutral

Apple Home and Matter
Recommended: Matter thermostats
Why: They work with Apple Home as well as Alexa and Google Home, and connect straight to your home WiFi. The filter shows every Matter model available: check each product page for the type of heating it suits.

WiFi or Zigbee thermostat?

WiFi thermostats connect straight to your home router, with no hub: the simplest choice if you're fitting one or two. If you already have a Zigbee gateway at home, see our smart Zigbee thermostats. To control individual radiators, instead of or alongside a wall thermostat, there are smart radiator valves.

Before you buy: what to check

• Type of system: on Beca thermostats the code tells you. GC is for boilers, GA for water heating (valves and actuators), GB for electric heating; on fan coil models AL means 2-pipe and EL 4-pipe.
• Wiring and power: almost all models run on 230 V and need live and neutral in the wall box. If only the 2 boiler wires come out of the old thermostat, choose a battery model.
• Wall box: for 86x86 or round boxes there is, for example, the 002 series; for the Italian 503 box, the 9000 Expert4house Edition, 8000 and 005 series. Each product page shows the mounting.
• Load: 5 A voltage-free contact for boilers, 16 A for electric heating. A boiler thermostat must not be used to power a heating element directly.
• 2.4 GHz WiFi: WiFi thermostats can't see 5 GHz networks.
• App: Tuya Smart / Smart Life for Beca and Tuya models, eWeLink for the eWeLink versions; Matter models also work with Apple Home.

WiFi thermostat FAQ

Will it work with my boiler?

Yes, if your boiler has a room thermostat input, i.e. the two wires your old thermostat was connected to. Boiler models close a voltage-free contact, just like a traditional thermostat. If in doubt, send us a photo of the terminals.

What's the difference between a thermostat and a programmable thermostat?

A programmable thermostat follows the schedule you set. WiFi thermostats are programmable too: for example the Beca 9000 Expert4house Edition has weekly programming with 6 time slots a day, set on the thermostat or in the app.

Does it work without internet?

Yes: the thermostat keeps controlling the temperature and you can change it with the buttons. Internet is needed to control it from the app when you're away and with voice assistants.

Does it work with Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant?

Alexa and Google Home, yes. With Home Assistant, models using the Tuya Smart app connect through the Tuya integration and Matter models through Matter; each product page shows the type of integration.

Can I install it myself?

It replaces your wall thermostat and connects to the same wires, plus the power supply if the model needs it. This is work on a 230 V installation: if you're not confident, ask an electrician.
