Smart Radiator Valves
A smart radiator valve (also called a smart TRV or WiFi radiator thermostat) replaces the thermostatic head on your radiator and lets you set the temperature room by room from the app, with schedules and by voice through Alexa and Google Home. In this category you'll find WiFi radiator valves that work without a hub and Zigbee radiator valves from Tuya, Beca and Sonoff, plus thermostat plugs for electric heaters and the actuator for wet underfloor heating. Below is a quick guide to choosing the right one for your system.
How a smart radiator valve works
It screws onto the radiator valve body in place of the manual head. It measures the room temperature and opens or closes the hot water flow to reach the value you've chosen. In the app you set a schedule for each room: bedrooms warmer in the evening, bathroom warm only in the morning, empty rooms kept low. Features you'll find on almost every model:
- Weekly schedule: different temperatures by time slot and by day.
- Open window detection: if the temperature drops suddenly, the valve closes the radiator so you don't heat with the window open.
- Holiday and eco mode: a low temperature when nobody is home.
- Child lock and manual adjustment on the valve, even without your phone.
The valve controls a single radiator; it doesn't switch the boiler on, which is still controlled by your room thermostat. To control the boiler from the app as well, see our smart boiler thermostats.
WiFi or Zigbee radiator valves?
WiFi
Hub: Not needed: the valve connects to your home router
App: Tuya Smart / Smart Life
Best for: A few radiators and a quick setup
Zigbee
Hub: Needed: for Tuya and Beca a gateway such as the Tuya Multimode, for Sonoff a hub such as the Zigbee Bridge Pro or the Bridge Ultra; all models in hubs and gateways
Advantages: Lower battery use and no load on your WiFi network
Best for: The whole house and systems with other Zigbee devices
Which smart radiator valve to choose
No hub, over WiFi
Recommended: Tuya Smart WiFi Thermostatic Valve
Why: It connects straight to your WiFi and is managed with the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app. It has an LCD display, 6 adapters in the box, open window detection and child lock. It runs on 3 AA batteries
Zigbee with the Tuya Smart / Smart Life app
Recommended: Tuya Zigbee valve with display, Tuya Zigbee radiator valve or the Beca BRT-100ZB
Why: All three need a Tuya Zigbee gateway. The first comes with adapters for Danfoss RA, RAV and RAVL valves; the second has boost, frost protection and anti-scale functions and lasts about a year and a half on 2 AA batteries; the Beca is the most affordable, with 5 adapters for 7 valve types and AAA batteries
Sonoff / eWeLink ecosystem
Recommended: Sonoff TRVZB
Why: A Zigbee valve for anyone who has or wants a Sonoff hub: you manage it in the eWeLink app together with Sonoff relays and sensors. M30x1.5 connection with adapters, open window detection and schedules from the app; works with Alexa and Google Home
Electric heaters, radiators and plug-in air conditioners
Recommended: Tuya WiFi thermostat plug or the Beca 16 A plug-in thermostat
Why: These aren't valves: they sit between the socket and the appliance and switch it on or off based on the temperature read by the probe. They also work in cooling mode; the Tuya handles 15 A. More models in electric heating thermostats
Wet underfloor heating
Recommended: Beca NC thermal actuator for manifolds
Why: It fits on the manifold, one per circuit (M30x1.5 connection), and opens the zone when that room's thermostat calls for heat. It runs on 230 V and must be wired to a thermostat: it has no app of its own. See our smart thermostats
Before you buy: what to check
- Thermostatic valve body: a smart valve fits where you have a thermostatic head today. If the radiator only has a manual valve, a plumber must first replace the valve body with a thermostatic one.
- Connection: the most common is M30x1.5; other valves use the adapters in the box. If in doubt, send us a photo.
- Hub: Zigbee valves don't work on their own. If you don't have a gateway yet, include one in your budget or choose the WiFi version.
- 2.4 GHz WiFi: WiFi valves can't see a 5 GHz network.
- Batteries: often not included; the product page lists the type (AA or AAA).
Smart radiator valves: frequently asked questions
Can I fit them without a plumber?
Yes, if the radiator already has a thermostatic valve body: remove the old head and screw on the smart one, without draining the system or turning off the heating. On first start-up the valve calibrates itself.
How much can I save?
It depends on the house, the heating system and your habits, so we don't quote percentages. The saving comes from not heating empty rooms and lowering the temperature at night and while you're out: smart valves do it automatically, radiator by radiator.
Do they work with Alexa and Google Home?
Yes: the Tuya and Beca valves through the Tuya Smart / Smart Life app, the Sonoff TRVZB through eWeLink. You can ask, for example, to set the living room to 21 degrees.
Can I use them with Home Assistant?
Yes: Zigbee valves with a USB dongle such as the Sonoff Dongle Plus MG24 and the ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT integrations, the Tuya WiFi valve with Tuya's cloud integration.
Do they work with central heating in apartment buildings?
Yes: the valve controls a single radiator, so it works both with your own boiler and with a shared central heating system. With shared heating you set the temperature of each room during the hours the system is on.
Not sure the valve fits your radiator? Write to us with a photo of the valve and the connection: we'll tell you which model to choose.
