Video door phones and doorbells
A WiFi video intercom lets you see and hear who's at the door and answer from your phone, even when you're away; models with a door release also open the front door or gate from the app. In this category you'll find Tuya smart video intercoms, kits with an indoor monitor, wireless smart doorbells and peephole cameras, many of which work with Alexa and Google Home. Below is a quick guide to choosing the right one for your entrance.
Video intercom, video doorbell or peephole camera?
A video intercom goes on the gate or front door and often controls the electric lock too. A smart doorbell replaces the doorbell button and usually runs on batteries. A peephole camera fits in the spyhole of your front door: the right choice in an apartment, where you can't change the building's intercom.
Which smart video intercom should you choose?
It depends on what you need and which cables you already have:
House with an electric gate or door lock
Recommended: Tuya Full HD video intercom with access control or the Tuya 2MP WiFi and RJ45 video intercom
Why: Answer and open from the app; they also open with a card and, on the first one, with a PIN code. They work over WiFi or a network cable, PoE included. The electric lock and its power supply are not included
Replace your old intercom with an indoor monitor
Recommended: Tuya AHD video intercom kit with 7-inch monitor if 4 wires reach the door, or the Tuya video intercom kit with 7-inch monitor if there's a network cable
Why: Touch monitor indoors and calls on your phone too: the monitor connects to WiFi
WiFi only, no monitor
Recommended: Tuya Full HD WiFi video intercom or the version with indoor chime
Why: Answer from your phone; with Alexa and Google Home you can also see who's there on Echo Show and Nest Hub
Several apartments
Recommended: Tuya video intercom kit for multiple apartments or the Tuya IP PoE video intercom with face recognition
Why: One button and one monitor per apartment; the second supports up to 999 indoor monitors and 4 outdoor stations over network cable
Wireless battery video doorbell
Recommended: Tuya Full HD battery video doorbell or the Xiaomi Smart Doorbell 3
Why: No cables to run. The Tuya has a 166° view and works with Alexa and Google Home; the Xiaomi has a 5200 mAh battery and an indoor chime, but works only with the Xiaomi Home app
Peephole camera for your front door
Recommended: Tuya 2MP peephole camera or the Tuya peephole with LCD monitor
Why: The first has a 180° view and is powered over USB; the second runs on batteries and shows who's outside on a 4.3-inch indoor screen
Entry by PIN, card, fingerprint or face
Recommended: Tuya video intercom with keypad and cards, with fingerprint reader or with face recognition
Why: Anyone with the code or card gets in without keys. They need a 12 V supply and an electric lock. More keypads and readers in smart access control, front-door locks in smart locks
Which cable reaches your door?
- No cable: choose a battery doorbell. 2.4 GHz WiFi must reach the door with a good signal.
- Network cable (CAT5E): choose an IP model with PoE, which gets data and power over the same cable and is more stable than WiFi.
- 4 wires from the old intercom: the AHD 1080P kit connects the outdoor station and the monitor with a 4-wire cable.
Not sure which cable you have? Open the door panel with the power off or ask an electrician; you can also send us a photo.
Before you buy: what to check
- Door release: to open the door or gate from the app you need an electric lock with its own power supply; the product sheet says what's included. To motorise the gate, see gate and garage automation.
- Power: access-control models need 12 V DC (some also take PoE); the doorbells and the peephole with monitor run on batteries; the 2MP peephole is powered over USB.
- Peephole: measure the hole diameter and the door thickness and compare them with the product sheet.
- Recording: almost all models save video to a microSD card, up to 32 or 128 GB depending on the model.
- App: Tuya models use the Tuya Smart / Smart Life app and don't work with Apple Home.
Smart video intercom FAQ
Can I answer the door when I'm not at home?
Yes: when someone rings you get a notification on your phone, see the video and talk to the visitor in the Tuya Smart / Smart Life app. The 2MP peephole camera has one-way audio, for listening only.
Can I open the gate from my phone?
Yes, with models that control a door release, such as the Full HD video intercom with access control or the one with face recognition, connected to an electric lock.
Do they work with Alexa and Google Home?
Many models do, and also show the video on Echo Show and Nest Hub: each product sheet lists the compatible assistants. The Xiaomi Smart Doorbell 3 works only with the Xiaomi Home app.
Can I use them with Home Assistant?
Some can, through the Tuya cloud integration. Most don't list RTSP or ONVIF, so the video is shown in the Tuya app, not on an NVR or locally in Home Assistant. For video surveillance, see our smart cameras.
Do I need an electrician?
For wired models, yes: the outdoor station, power supply and electric lock are connected with the power off. Battery doorbells and peephole cameras can be fitted yourself.
